During 2010, Disney is celebrating -- encouraging, in fact -- volunteerism by offering one-day free theme park admission for anyone who completes a day of volunteer service with one of their partner organizations. This video tells the story!
This was a surprise! This is the last year that Disney is going to host the Super Soap Weekend at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the perfect spots on your Walt Disney World maps to live out your television fantasies. (Ok, so that's a stretch... but it really is the place at Disney World that celebrates the world of TV, film and music!)

Cameron Mathison will be the featured star. Joining him are 30 stars from the ABC daytime dramas: Thorsten Kaye, Aiden Turner and Rebecca Budig from “All My Children,” Erika Slezak, Michael Easton and Kristen Alderson from “One Life to Live,” and Laura Wright, Kelly Monaco and Jason Thompson from “General Hospital.” Soapnet.com will reveal the full Super Soap Weekend all-star lineup on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

So here's the official scoop on why this is the last Super Soap Weekend:

This year will mark the last Super Soap Weekend in Orlando as ABC’s Daytime Division embarks on the 2009 Soap Nation Tour, a collection of nationwide events designed to interact with fans on a year-round basis offering greater access to stars in more cities, more often. The final Walt Disney World weekend will be dedicated to the fans with special retrospectives and exclusive productions.

What does this mean for guests? First of all, some very special events! The word is that special trivia and commemorative clip packages will honor the 45th anniversary of “General Hospital,” the 40th anniversary of “One Life to Live,” “All My Children’s” 10,000th episode, and past Super Soap Weekends will be shown during the event. Expect lots of interactive events, including new mobile programs and text trivia. A special musical number will be developed for Colgate Total Street Jam that honors the final event, as well.

Of course, guests will have the opportunity to meet favorite stars from “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital.” Festivities include celebrity motorcades, autograph sessions, game shows, interviews and the chance to purchase one-of-a-kind memorabilia from each of the shows. The Colgate Total Street Jam will close the event each day with live musical performances by some favorite daytime stars.

And most importantly, expect crowds... large crowds! Super Soap Weekend is always very popular and the "swan song" will most likely bring out even larger crowds. So be sure to study your Disney's Hollywood Studios map and the daily schedule, and plan to arrive before park opening!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3545371688786417008.post-17908689895798020782008-06-30T03:32:00.001-07:002008-06-30T03:35:13.915-07:00Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood StudiosIf you've ever thought about heading to Disney World in June *just* to see Star Wars Weekends, then you just gotta see this video:

Enjoy!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3545371688786417008.post-35498563691780129192008-06-27T07:51:00.001-07:002008-06-27T07:54:19.660-07:00American Idol David Cook hits Disney's Hollywood StudiosLooks like the team at Disney World are making progress on the new American Idol Experience. Can Disney's Animal Kingdom really be 10 years old?

In some ways, the Animal Kingdom still feels like a new park.... It seems like I discover something new every time I visit. There are so many special exhibits hidden along the walkways and ride queues. Maybe it just feels that it's all new because each season brings new and different plants. Maybe the exhibits never get stale or boring because the animals move around in their habitats. In any case, I still feel that there is so much more to explore.

On the other hand, Disney's Animal Kingdom has definitely matured into a very enjoyable experience. The first few months were challenging as the Disney team finetuned traffic flow and signage. Attractions have been added and updated throughout the last decade. And some of the latest additions are among the best -- the new Expedition Everest and "Finding Nemo: The Musical" are definite must-sees.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that there will be a special re-dedication ceremony when the park opens on April 22... I'll be watching for reports and will post them here. Stroller rental prices have been the same for about three years. Last weekend, the price of Walt Disney World stroller rentals increased to $15/day for single strollers and $31/day for double strollers.

Here's a complete listing of the miscellaneous items at Disney World parks:

Parking: $11 per day or $12 per day for camper/trailer

Single Stroller: $15 per day, or $13 per day for length-of-stay rentals

Double Stroller: $31 per day, or $27 per day for length-of-stay rentals

Locker Rental: $5 per day plus $5 refundable deposit

Wheelchair: $10 per day, or $8 per day for length-of-stay rentals

ECV (electric cart): $45 per day plus $5 refundable deposit

Kennel: $13 per pet per day

To get your refundable deposit back, you have to return the locker key or ECV to the rental location by the end of the day.

With single stroller rentals going so high, it might be worth the effort of bringing your stroller from home or even stopping at a nearby Target or Walmart to pick up a stroller for your stay. That could make your Walt Disney World vacation just a little bit easier!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3545371688786417008.post-56302730551736412902008-03-05T19:53:00.000-08:002008-03-10T19:58:52.435-07:00Disney World Map Spring Update: Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot
The Disney World map of Epcot will feature a few extra attractions this spring… all in honor of the 15th annual Flower and Garden Festival. And I'm very excited this year because it's the longest festival ever!

Epcot is one of my favorite parks without any special embellishments. So the Flower and Garden Festival is like icing on the cake -- although that metaphor is probably best reserved for the International Food and Wine Festival scheduled for the fall. Okay… the Flower and Garden Festival is like discovering an extra row of roses blooming in your garden.

If you've ever been to Epcot, you know that part of its magic is the beautiful landscaping. During the Flower and Garden Festival, the Disney crew goes all out. Giant topiaries of your favorite characters, special gardens and exhibits, and even a butterfly house are added to the park. Horticulture experts give special talks… the list goes on and on.

Live musical performances are another Epcot trademark, and the festival takes a special spin on the music angle. Every evening (well, almost every evening), you can enjoy a special "Flower Power" show featuring music from the 60s. Most are tribute bands, but a few are performances by the 60s stars themselves. Each show is about 30-40 minutes, presented three times each evening in the American Showcase Theater. That's the outdoor amphitheater in front of the USA Pavilion.

If you are traveling to Disney World from March 19 to June 1, be sure to include extra time for Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival in your touring plans. As you enter the park, pick up the current Times Guide and special Flower and Garden Festival brochure. They are must-have additions to your Disney World map!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3545371688786417008.post-9201432733862024762007-12-02T16:41:00.000-08:002008-06-27T07:55:11.144-07:00Disney's Hollywood Studios: An OverviewHello to Hollywood ... and More

The world of entertainment is the theme of Disney-MGM Studios. Since its debut in 1989, Disney-MGM Studios has been the WDW park where guests could immerse themselves in the world of movies, television and music.

The World of Entertainment

Disney-MGM Studios is divided into seven areas, each named for a street or area famous in the entertainment industry. Both has a "lazy river" for just chilling out.

Blizzard Beach
Ever wonder what would happen if a bizarre snow storm hit Central Florida? Disney Imagineers did — and the result is Blizzard Beach, a water park with the features of a ski resort complete with a ski-jump mountain. Set in a mix of alpine ski lodge and tropical lagoon, the highlight of the park is its plentiful supply of high-speed water slides.

Typhoon Lagoon

After the three hurricanes of 2004, the tall tale behind Typhoon Lagoon may seem too realistic — A furious storm roared across the land, leaving a shrimp boat atop a volcanic mountain and a delightful assortment of water adventures. Nestled among lush vegetation, Typhoon Lagoon is home to exciting water slides, surf pool, shark reef and a meandering stream. New in 2005, the Crush ‘n’ Gusher is the latest in “water coasters” and is a hit with thrill-loving guests.

Tickets

You can use one of your Water Park Fun and More visits for admission or purchase separate tickets. Annual Passholders receive a $4 discount for age 10+ and $3 discount for age 3-9.

Arriving at the Water Parks

Blizzard Beach: If you are staying at most WDW resorts, you will travel to Blizzard Beach via the Disney’s Animal Kingdom bus. See the resort pages for details on transportation to the park. Because Blizzard Beach is the second stop, it may be faster to drive if you have a car. If you are staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge or one of the All Star Resorts, you will travel via the Epcot bus or a special bus. If you are not staying at a WDW resort, you will drive to the Blizzard Beach parking lot, then walk to the entrance. Present your tickets at the turnstiles and enter Blizzard Beach.

Typhoon Lagoon: If you are staying at a WDW resort, you will travel to Typhoon Lagoon via the Downtown Disney bus. See the resort pages for details on transportation to the park. Because the bus makes several stops at Downtown Disney, it may be faster to drive if you have a car. If you are not staying at a WDW resort, you will drive to the Typhoon Lagoon parking lot, then walk to the entrance. Present your tickets at the turnstiles and enter Typhoon Lagoon.

After You’re Inside the Park

Send one person straight to one of the beach areas, and claim a beach chair. Send another person to one of the locker areas to claim a locker for the day. Taking care of these two things will maximize your enjoyment for the day.

More Tips

Morning Extra Magic Hours are available for WDW resort guests on most days. Evening Magic Hours may also be available during summer months. Check the schedule when you arrive.

Because both water parks fill up quickly during hot weather, plan to arrive as early as possible. You might also plan to arrive late-afternoon after some guests leave.

No rivets, buckles or exposed metal on swimsuits. One-piece swimsuits are recommended.

Towels can be rented at the park shop near the park entrance.

Coolers are allowed, but no glass containers or alcoholic beverages.

Blizzard Beach is mostly open to the full sun with little shade. While Typhoon Lagoon is more shaded than Blizzard Beach, you are still exposed to a high level of sun. Wear plenty of sunscreen, and reapply throughout the day.

Wearing water shoes will keep your feet safe from the hot ground and unexpected hazards.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3545371688786417008.post-89829983344467875742007-11-14T16:45:00.000-08:002007-12-26T16:48:00.972-08:00Magic Kingdom: An Overview
Where Fantasy Comes to Life

Fantasy is the central theme of the Magic Kingdom. This park was designed for those who are kids or at least kids at heart. Guests can live out their fantasies in five themed lands. Begin with this page and the EZ Fun Maps that follow to learn more about this fantasy world.

Opened in October 1971, the Magic Kingdom was the first park at Walt Disney World. It is a tribute to Walt’s dream that “the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn — together.” Those words engraved on a plaque in Cinderella’s castle say it all!

Seven Lands Await You

The Magic Kingdom is divided into seven lands, which form a circle around Cinderella’s castle. The castle plaza at the center of the park is nicknamed the Hub by most guests. You will begin near the train station in Main Street USA. Each land has its own theme and special interest for someone in your group.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3545371688786417008.post-72012258718357375522007-10-26T16:14:00.000-07:002007-12-26T16:49:58.685-08:00Epcot: An Overview
Walt's Vision

Exploration of culture and learning is the major theme of Epcot. (Aug. 9, 2007) -- In the Walt Disney World theme park famous for all things Hollywood, it's curtain up on the launch of new attractions, new looks, new breakthrough experiences...

"...and a brand-new name.

"Disney-MGM Studios will be renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios, effective January 2008, announced Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort.

"'The new name reflects how the park has grown from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today's Hollywood has to offer -- in music, television, movies and theater,' she said."

A name change had been anticipated for some time... so this announcement answers a few questions. The news release had a few other tidbits:

More details about the new Toy Story Mania under construction on Mickey Avenue. Here's what the release said: "Past a queuing area featuring a giant Mr. Potato Head, guests grab 3-D glasses, board fanciful ride vehicles and zip into a world of exciting midway-style games hosted by many of their favorite "Toy Story" characters including Woody, Hamm and Rex. Once inside "Andy's Toy Box," the competition heats up. Who can rack up the most points? Using spring-action shooters, guests launch darts at balloons, rings at aliens, eggs at whimsical barnyard targets."

A new parade named the Block Party Bash will replace Disney Stars and Motor Cars. The new parade is being touted as "the wildest, most interactive parade in Disney history." Favorite characters from "The Incredibles," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "A Bug's Life" will be featured.

Playhouse Disney-Live on Stage will be recast with new characters. After closing for most of January, the new show will reopen in February with stars from "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," "Little Einsteins," "Handy Manny" and more.

The High School Musical Pep Rally is being replaced this fall with Disney High School Musical 2: School's Out. Not a big surprise... considering all the hype for the new movie coming later this month. We can expect more singing and dancing in the streets.

Characters will be greeting guests in the Animation Courtyard, with Handy Manny joining the team in November. Many of these character greeting areas had been on Mickey Avenue, which is closed now for construction of Toy Story Mania.

The news release also reminded us of the upcoming Playhouse Disney In Concert series that is part of the Little Ones Travel Time this fall.

One more bit of news... The Harlem Gospel Choir will perform at the Studios November 30-December 25. Yet another reason to love the holidays at Disney World!

And one more observation... While the name doesn't officially begin until January, I noted that all of the references to activities planned for the rest of 2007 referred to the park as Disney's Hollywood Studios. I expect that we begin to see some rebranding right away.

I can hardly wait to see the new logos...
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
